The match started late due to rain. Daryl Mitchell, who scored an unbeaten 97 off stump on day 2, completed his ton with a drive-thru extra cover in the first over of the day.

Soon, however, New Zealand lost its pace by five balls. At first, Mitchell Stuart pushed Brad back to the keeper, which ended the 195-run partnership and then returned to the Colin de Grandhomme after a run-out.

The team achieved a hat-trick as Brad expelled Jamison. Shortly thereafter, Tom Blundell exited the pavilion as his partner was out on the other end and missed his century by four runs. After that, Tim Southee (21) extended the lead with some boundaries, before New Zealand finally bowled out for 285 in their second innings to give England a target of 277.

Short scores: England 141 and 216/5 (Joe Root not out, 77, Ben Stokes 54; Kyle Jamison 4/59) New Zealand still need 61 runs 132 & 285 (Darley Mitchell 108, Tom Blundell 96; Matty Potts 33/56, Stuart) Broad 3/76).
